Experience Costa Rica and Immerse Yourself in the World of Horses at Finca Soley!

Looking to step away from the everyday and dive into something truly meaningful? Finca Soley offers a unique opportunity to experience life in the tranquil beauty of rural Costa Rica while gaining a deeper understanding of horses and their care. Whether you're looking to reconnect with nature, embrace sustainable living, or explore the horse world, our volunteer program is perfect for you!

At Finca Soley, you will be surrounded by breathtaking landscapes and fresh, clean air. This is a place to immerse yourself in the art of horsemanship, learn about animal care, and discover a slower, more fulfilling way of life. Whether you’re new to horses or already have owned your own horse, we welcome you to join us and learn from the best in a supportive, peaceful environment.

What’s in it for you?

Under the guidance of Isa, a highly skilled and passionate instructor, you will have the opportunity to practice classical horsemanship and the art of riding, following the philosophy of the old masters, taught my Manuel J. de Oliveira and his vertical school. This approach to riding focuses on improving the horse’s health and well-being through proper alignment, balance, and communication. By focusing on the horse’s physical health and mental well-being, you will learn techniques that benefit both the horse and rider, creating a harmonious partnership.

In addition to classical riding, you will also experience liberty training, which is a fun and powerful way to connect with horses. This form of training allows horses to express themselves freely while building trust and deepening the bond between horse and handler. It’s an enjoyable and engaging way to work with horses while fostering a strong, positive connection.

During your time at Finca Soley, you will:

  • Learn about horse care: Feeding, grooming, mucking out, and maintaining a clean, healthy environment for the horses.

  • Practice classical horsemanship: Develop skills in the art of vertical riding based on the old masters principles to improve the health and fitness of the horses.

  • Engage in liberty training: Connect with horses in a playful, natural way that builds trust and strengthens the relationship.

  • Gain practical farm experience: Help with other animals and contribute to daily farm activities, including sustainable farming projects.

  • Attend a basic Spanish course (included in the fee) to improve your language skills and engage with the local culture.

  • Explore Costa Rica: Enjoy the stunning rural environment and take advantage of weekends off to discover Costa Rica’s natural beauty and exciting activities.

This program is ideal for anyone who wants to learn about horses in a holistic way—focusing not just on riding, but on the well-being of the horses and the development of a deeper connection with them. Whether you are considering a future in horse or simply want to expand your knowledge, this is a chance to experience the horse world from a unique perspective.

Why stay longer?

Staying longer allows you to maximize your learning experience. The more time you spend at Finca Soley, the deeper your connection with the horses and the more you’ll learn about sustainable farming, equine health, and the art of vertical horsemanship. A longer stay means a more enriching, hands-on experience where you can truly make a difference and absorb everything the program has to offer.

What we’re looking for:

  • Individuals passionate about horse care, animal welfare, and nature

  • Those eager to learn classical horsemanship, equine care, and sustainable farming

  • People who are physically fit and ready for active, hands-on work

  • A positive attitude and an open mind to embrace a slower, more fulfilling lifestyle

Animal Rescue and Rehoming Program:

At Finca Soley, we are dedicated to providing a safe haven for animals in need through our animal rescue program. As a volunteer, you will have the unique opportunity to be involved in their care and rehabilitation, contributing to their recovery and helping them find their forever homes. Support and Mentorship

At Finca Soley, we are a family-run operation, and we take great pride in offering personal, hands-on mentorship throughout your stay.

Isa, our founder and lead horse expert, is an exceptional and passionate horsewoman with over two decades of professional experience in working with horses. She is not only skilled in natural hoof trimming and basic veterinary care, but her true expertise lies in rehabilitating horses, bringing them to their best health, and educating young horses. Isa loves sharing her knowledge, and you'll have the chance to learn from her experience in these areas.

Milton, originally from Nicaragua, is the heart of our farm’s infrastructure. He is incredibly handy and has personally built all the structures on the farm, from the stables to the farm’s facilities. His expertise extends to sustainable practices and using local resources to create the farm’s sustainable and practical spaces.

Together, Isa and Milton have built their dream from scratch, and they love to inspire others to dare to achieve what may seem out of reach. Whether it’s through lessons, farm tours or making cheese together, they are always ready to encourage and guide you.

Safety and Well-being

At Finca Soley, your safety is our top priority. Our horses are extremely well-trained, and we adhere to the highest standards of care and safety in all activities. The foundation of our horsemanship practices is centered around safety training, ensuring that our horses are calm, responsive, and easy to work with, whether you're involved in groundwork, liberty training, or riding.

Additionally, our farm is located in an extremely calm and safe area, surrounded by the peaceful natural beauty of Costa Rica. This tranquil environment contributes to both the well-being of the animals and the volunteers, offering a serene setting for learning and working.

Throughout your time here, you will receive detailed instruction on how to approach the horses, how to stay safe while working with them, and how to perform your tasks responsibly. We take the time to ensure that all volunteers, regardless of their experience level, feel confident and prepared. Isa will guide you through each step, ensuring you understand the practices and techniques that will keep you and the horses safe.

By the end of your experience, you will have learned safe handling practices, horse behavior, and how to properly care for and train horses—skills that not only ensure safety but also deepen your understanding of working with animals in a respectful and effective manner.

Reviews from Previous Volunteers

Dana Trautman, Austria

100% would do it again!

I had a blast working there and meeting all these amazing people. The horses are very well behaved and you really get to learn alot from Isa and her horses. Everyone at the farm was so welcoming and open - you just can‘t feel not included. The work and training is nicely balanced and you have alot of freetime to do activities (very well organized and fun). I would definetly recommend everyone going there, who enjoys working with horses and is looking to learning new things about them.
